Job Posting for MCHS Administrator

This person is responsible to the Society’s Board of Directors for carrying out its mission as it pertains to the operations of the museum, research library, Perkins Hall, Riley Church and Pringle School. The administrator is responsible for staff and volunteer supervision, staff hiring, firing and management. He/she oversees artifact collection and exhibit management and overall public programming including the West Harmony Schoolhouse program. Working with the Board of Directors, the administrator assists in the preparation of the annual budget and in fundraising efforts for the Society. Along with the Society’s Building Committee he/she is responsible for buildings operation and maintenance. The administrator assists the Board with short and long range planning. He/she advises the Board on policies such as artifact loans, collections, personnel and risk management issues and on matters such as local, state and federal regulations as they affect operations of the Society.
The not-for-profit McHenry County Historical Society operates a county history museum with a budget of over $275,000. The Society also preserves several historic structures both on and off the museum grounds. Information about the Society and its mission and services may be found on line at www.mchsonline.org. The society currently has three employees who work as a team sharing a variety of responsibilities necessary to manage a museum, its collections, properties and educational programs. In addition the Society utilizes many volunteers in this effort.
Interested applicants should have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in history, social sciences, education, journalism or business related field; a Master’s Degree in museum studies with administrative emphasis or equivalent management and administrative experience preferred. Candidates must have the ability to work well and to communicate effectively with a variety of people including staff members, volunteers, Board of Directors and community members. Effective writing , verbal and technical skills are needed for this position. He/she must be able to handle multiple tasks and projects at the same time. A strong interest in museums and local history is required for this position. Experience in grant writing, member development and fundraising is desirable.
Compensation and benefits: Salary range - $55,000 - $65,000 based on experience. SEP-IRA Employer contribution of 10% of salary after three months continuous employment. Employer contribution of a percentage of health insurance premium purchased by the employee. Section 125 Flexible Spending Account also available.
